Bristol, UK: Low Carbon Community Fayre @ Easton

Date: Sunday, 18 August 2024

Time: 12:00 - 15:00 BST

Location: Easton Community Centre, Bristol

The Low Carbon Community Fayre marked the first community outreach for the SEE "Smart Energy Community" research project as it expands into the Greater Bristol area. We brought together residents of Bristol to explore low-carbon initiatives at home and cooking solutions. Following a successful phase in Hong Kong, where 600 households engaged in social learning initiatives, the SEE "Smart Energy Community" research aims to bring transformative change to the community in achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

Highlights of the Fayre

1. Low Carbon Cooking Workshops

Led by Bristol community chef Samina Iqbal, participants enjoyed three engaging cooking workshops with recipes designed by Norah El-Gohary, the owner of Nouna’s Kitchen. We showcased how handy, delicious, and beneficial low carbon cooking can be. Samina demonstrated how to prepare the classic Lebanese and Syrian salad, Tabbouleh. The vegan and gluten-free dish offered a delicious way to experience healthy eating. She also shared with the community how to prepare Fatteh, a beloved Middle Eastern dish layered with crispy flatbread, chickpeas, and yogurt. For a kid-friendly recipe, Samina worked with the participants to prepare a treat with crushed biscuits topped with whipped cream and chocolate.

2. STEM Workshops

The fayre also featured engaging STEM activities designed to educate young minds about renewable energy:

  • DIY Solar Car Model

Children built their own solar car models, learning about alternative energy sources while testing their skills in building their own toys.

  • Design a Wind Turbine Competition

Led by an educator from UWE Bristol, this hands-on workshop allowed participants to design wind turbines, blending creativity with engineering principles.

3. Electricity Bill Clinic

Researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University led an informative Electricity Bill Clinic, equipping participants with eco-tips for energy savings. Participants took an energy quiz to enhance their knowledge and discovered how simple devices can track and optimize household electricity usage.

From September 2024 to October 2025, 100 households in the Greater Bristol area will embark on a social learning journey, guided by VISION, APPROACH, and ACTION PLANS.

Participaing household may participate a series of free STEM workshops for kids and families and may get up to £80 gift card upon the completion of the learning!
