Story of “SEE Community”
Together with our SEE Mates, we are actively collaborating to construct low-carbon communities and pave the way towards a sustainable future for Hong Kong.
About Energy...
The Earth's invaluable resource, energy, can be categorized into renewable and non-renewable sources. Unfortunately, our heavy dependence on non-renewable energy for power generation leads to significant greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2).
Total energy consumption in Hong Kong In 2019:
286,488 Terajoules(TJ)
Residential sector attributes 21%
= 61,026 TJ
Public Hosuing = 28%;
HA Subsidized Sale Flats = 15%;
Other Housing = 8%
3 major residential energy uses:
cooking, air conditioning, and hot water
Private housing 49%
Total CO2 produced by the energy consumption of residential sector in 2019
= approximately 104,000,000 trees felled annually
This staggering number of trees required to offset CO2 emissions
would cover around 84% of Hong Kong.
Current Challenges
Global Warming
Excessive use of non-renewable energy
Leads to changes in the number of extreme temperature days and temperature rise
Rising concentrations of greenhouse gases are causing climate change, the most obvious impact on Hong Kong being the rise in global average temperature.
The total number of hot days per year in Hong Kong has increased sharply in recent years, while the total number of cold days per year has gradually decreased.
Climate change not only affects our daily needs (e.g. food) and the environment, but also severely damages ecosystems that are inextricably linked to us.
If we continue with the current rate of growth in greenhouse gas emissions and take no action to reduce them, the consequences will be unimaginable.
We, as citizens, can also make a valuable contribution!
The Hong Kong Government has launched the 2050 carbon neutrality target and is actively developing renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
The fight against climate change cannot be left to governments and businesses alone, but requires the participation of every one of us.
Let's work towards carbon neutrality, set personal emission reduction targets and change our energy-consuming and high-carbon lifestyle in order to fight against climate change.
Our Solution
Build low carbon “Smart Energy Communities”
Fairview Park
Sheung Shui
Sai Kung
& TKO
Ap Lei Chau & South Horizons
Over a three-year period from 2022 to 2024, we will collaborate with 600 households in 4 communities in Hong Kong to establish energy-smart, low-carbon communities.
SEE Mates will facilitate the construction of low-carbon communities by:
-
The “SEE” Mobile App
-
Enabling users to monitor and track their home electricity consumption
-
Encouraging the development of energy-saving behaviors
-
-
Engaging in Community Low-carbon Activities
Pioneering the energy future
in the community
“SEE Smart Energy Community” is dedicated to inspiring households to explore the future of energy in their communities, including the development of solar and other renewable energy sources.
The Seongdaegol community in Korea serves as a successful example of how citizen participation can shape a "new energy structure and a new society"!
In the Seongdaegol community, solar panels have been installed in almost one-third of the homes, representing the highest proportion of installations in Seoul.
Alongside community collaborative activities such as the energy library and home energy diagnostics provided by solar doctors, they are leading the way in developing low-carbon communities in Seoul.
Your participation
You can become a “SEE Mate”, and join in transforming yourself and your community through the four dimensions of “Installation, Visualisation, Rewards, and Workshops”.
Imagine, design, and put into practice how to utilize energy wisely and embrace a low-carbon lifestyle that embodies the principles of “SEE Energy, Save Energy, and Active Participation in Energy Future”!
