About Us

SMART ENERGY COMMUNITY

“Smart Energy Community” is a research project led by the Department of Geography and the Asian Energy Studies Centre at Hong Kong Baptist University, working together with experts and educational organisations from nine universities around the world, as well as local businesses and community organisations.

From 2022 to 2024, we collaborated with six hundred residents in four Hong Kong communities, including Fairview Park, Metropolis Plaza, Sai Kung Community and Island Resort/South Horizons (TBD) to build low‑carbon smart‑energy communities.

Bring The Community Together

By installing smart electricity‑use sensors at home and using the “SEE” mobile app for personalised smart energy tips, residents can earn “Carbon Coins.” Starting from everyday actions, we aim to change electricity‑use habits and foster an energy-saving atmosphere for society.

By organising community workshops, participants can make their own solar‑energy device by hand in an innovative and practical way to bring renewable‑energy technology into daily life and inspire creativity in using renewable energy. This not only can promote the advantages of renewable energy, but also let residents have a better understanding of community energy resource issues.

Through experiences and discussions, we inspire “smart‑energy households” to co‑imagine: how to save energy, generate energy, and allocate profits from energy-saving activities and solar energy. Together, we explore the possibilities of future smart‑energy communities.

Communities

Our Phase 1 research is an interdisciplinary, mixed-method study of four communities in Hong Kong, involving a total of 600 households. We aim to develop and test a model for enabling behavioral change among residential electricity consumers which is underpinned by both data science (smart sensors and big data analytics (BDA)) and participatory engagement.

We test behavioral interventions by means of our mobile household energy application(app) that will deliver energy advice, in combination with a deep engagement community activities which include regular community activities (e.g., envisioning dialogues, community energy deliberative workshops, interactive energy maps, a pilot blockchain carbon token incentive scheme, and a benchmarking index.

Solar Energy

×

The SEE project aims to establish four low-carbon smart energy communities in Hong Kong over the next four years, from 2021 to 2024 by engaging 600 households, along with experts from local universities, educational institutions, businesses, and community groups.

Goals:

1. develop energy-saving habits among SEE Mates;

2. Committed to inspiring residents to explore the future of community energy, including the development of solar and other renewable energy sources in the community.
