AI-assisted Simplified Energy Audit -Energy Auditor Training Programme

Dates: 3, 10 & 28 December 2025

Location: Vitality Place

The Asian Energy Studies Centre (AESC) of the Department of Geography at

Hong Kong Baptist University, in collaboration with SideBySide, organised a

three-session Energy Auditor Training Programme in December 2025. The programme provided 13 mentally rehabilitated people with introductory training in energy auditing.

The initiative aimed to equip participants with the skills to use various measurement tools and analytical methods to conduct basic energy audits, while enhancing their understanding of the relationship between climate change, energy use, and

energy-saving actions.

Session 1: Introduction to Energy Auditing and Fundamental Skills

In the first training session, participants were introduced to the basic concepts of energy auditing. The team presented the key steps involved in an energy audit, and practised three main data collection methods:

  • Knowledge of energy audit and electricity-saving tips

  • On-site measurement (using tools such as laser distance meters and

  • infrared thermometers)

  • Interview skills (understanding usage patterns and management challenges)

Session 2: Energy Analysis and Energy-Saving Strategies

The second training session focused on energy data analysis and the design of energy-saving measures. Participants first learned how to calculate and analyze energy consumption, including calculating Light Power Density (LPD) and the Energy Utilization Index (EUI), as well as estimating electricity usage and costs. The team then introduced different types of energy audit reports, helping participants understand their basic structure and learn how to clearly organize and present analytical results. Finally, the session concluded with a variety of practical household energy-saving tips, encouraging participants to develop energy-efficient habits and adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Session 3: Field Application and Energy Audit Practicum

The third training session began with a review of the key concepts covered in the

first two sessions, followed by a practical component in which participants conducted

on-site data collection at the Society’s Long Cheng Place office using various measurement tools.

After completing the training series, participants would have the opportunity to

carry out simple energy audits for other organizations in the community.
