Seoul: Junior Home Energy Auditors’ STEM Programme – Briefing Session

Date: 24 September 2025

Participants: 20 parents and students

The Junior Home Energy Auditors’ STEM Programme – Briefing Session was successfully held with about 20 participants, marking the beginning of another exciting chapter in our collaboration between Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and Seongmisan School in Seoul.

This event also welcomed our youth partner, Green Environment Youth Korea (GEYK), who will co-host the upcoming workshops. The session introduced HKBU’s research team and GEYK’s work in promoting youth-led climate and energy initiatives across Korea.

Building on the success of the four low-carbon energy workshops conducted at Seongmisan School in 2024, this year we are proud to take our collaboration a step further — by officially establishing the HKBU × Seongmisan School Energy Hub. The Hub will serve as a platform for continued learning, experimentation, and community engagement in smart energy practices.

During the briefing, the AESC research team also shared updates and highlights on our ongoing research under Phase 3: Smart Urban Living Labs (ULLs). These ULLs act as real-life experimental platforms, where governments, schools, researchers, and communities work hand in hand to design, test, and refine innovative solutions to urban challenges such as climate change. Through these living labs, AESC aims to explore how smart technologies and energy data can empower households to play an active role in achieving net-zero goals — across our three district-wide communities in Hong Kong, Seoul, and Bristol.

In the second part of the session, the team introduced the Junior Home Energy Auditors’ STEM Programme, inviting Seongmisan School students to join as AI-assisted Home Energy Auditors. Through this training, students will not only gain digital literacy, communication skills, and energy audit knowledge, but also learn how to apply these skills to real-world challenges — identifying opportunities to save energy at home, in school, and in their wider Seongmisan community.

Parents at the briefing expressed strong interest in the programme, particularly in how their children could contribute to meaningful environmental change. The AESC team emphasised that this project goes beyond STEM education — it nurtures awareness and community action, empowering young learners to become real contributors to the city’s carbon-neutral journey.
