The Asian Energy Studies Centre (AESC) of the Hong Kong Baptist University, Department of Geography, organised a service-learning day trip to Shenzhen for 15 students from the course GEOG3007. The programme included a morning STEM workshop with SEN students, and an afternoon visit to a carbon-neutral community, offering HKBU students hands-on engagement with low-carbon education and green innovation.

In the morning session, AESC and HKBU students visited Shenzhen Luohu District Xingyuan School to deliver a STEM workshop to SEN students, joined by several student representatives from Hong Chi Morninglight School, Yuen Long. HKBU students demonstrated the use of infrared cameras to detect temperature differences, helping young SEN learners visualise heat and energy use through colour patterns. Students then guided participants in assembling simple STEM-kit models such as music boxes and small cars, which were activated by completing the corresponding energy circuits. These activities enabled the SEN students to explore energy concepts through touch, colour, and movement.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Biosphere 3 · Meisha Carbon-Neutral Community to learn about China’s advancement in low-carbon technologies and community design. HKBU students reviewed the centre’s real-time smart energy data dashboard, gaining insights into how the community operates on net-zero energy. They also observed circular practices such as food waste processing using black soldier flies, as well as the creative reuse of recycled materials in architecture and art installations. These demonstrations showcased integrated approaches to achieving sustainable living.

The trip provided meaningful service-learning opportunities for HKBU students, deepening their understanding of environmental sustainability while contributing to inclusive STEM education. Through cross-border collaboration and experiential learning, the programme strengthened students’ awareness of zero-carbon transitions and the role of technology in building low-carbon communities.
